Day 4
On Day 4, I flew back to Utah to go to two of my very best friends' wedding (they married each other, they have been dating since they were 15 and 16 respectively -- I take full credit for their marriage). Anyway, while I was excited for the wedding, I was not excited to leave Toby alone in San Francisco.
After his first day of work, I picked Toby up at the office and he drove me to the Oakland airport, where he had to leave me with red eyes and a puffy face at the security check. It was horrible. I met on a lady on the plane (who is a teacher in Alpine School District) who asked me where my husband was. When I told her he had to stay and work she said,
"How long have you been married?"
I responded, "Almost two years."
She then looked at me with concern, "Oh my poor dear! You are still a new bride!" and then continued, "It will be okay, you are only gone for a couple of days."
It was nice to have someone realize my anguish in leaving my poor, dear husband all alone in the City. I am so needy, am I not??
Anyway, while I was away, Toby was getting to know his way around the office. When he would call me at night, here is what he had to report.
Tuesday -- Toby and the other interns ate breakfast with one of the partners at WTAS. On Monday, Toby was informed this particular partner was a HUGE baseball fan -- he never misses a Giant's game. The AT&T Park employees even have a name for him, "The Commissioner." He has box season tickets and Toby is hoping he will be able to snag an invite to a game sometime during the summer.
So while at breakfast, Toby started asking him about baseball. When "The Commissioner" found out Toby knew quite a bit about the sport, he became completely giddy and immediately entered into a serious conversation about plays, players, etc. Toby felt right at home.
Toby went out to lunch later that day with some of the interns who are law students at the local law school, Hastings. Being long time residents of the city, they wanted to show Toby one of their favorite places to eat. It was a sushi place near the office. Having never really had sushi, Toby thought he would give it a try. However, it did not seem to live up to expectations.
Toby ordered a variety of different dishes and after sampling a little bit of each, he discovered he may not be sophisticated enough for such delicacies. Not wanting to offend his co-workers, Toby ate the remainder of his food, without chewing, with a smile on his face. (I don't think I could have pulled off such a stunt -- I think serving a mission in a foreign country may have helped Toby in this area).
Wednesday -- On Wednesday, Toby discovered the "Break Room." The room contains plate after plate of doughnuts, cookies, candy bars, and other goodies. It also has a refrigerator with an endless supply of Diet Coke, Diet Dr. Pepper and other varieties of drinks. Toby was in heaven.
When I came home from Utah, I asked Toby what he would like for lunch. I packed him a sandwich and a yogurt, and then wondered why he didn't ask for more food. When he came home that day, Toby told me of the wonderful treats he consumed at his desk from 8:00 to 5:00. Mystery solved.
However, a few days ago, Toby hopped in the car at the end of the day with a look of concern on his face. I asked him what was wrong and he said,
"Man, I have to stop eating so many treats."
I replied, "Okay, we'll start putting more good food in your lunches."
Toby then looked at me with an extremely serious expression, "Annie, I just realized how much weight people gain from the break room. I think within the first six months the average weight gain is 25 pounds."
He then leaned back in his chair and stared at me with his mouth open, looking completely aghast.
Ha!
Since that day, I have always packed Toby very large and very healthy lunches. At the end of the day Toby will come home and report to me all of the treats he turned down at the office -- a huge feat for Mr. Matt Tobler as those of you who know him can attest to.
Good thing we know Tobe can take care of himself in this big city. He's not going to let that break room get a hold of him.
Way to huss, Tobe.
